Communities::Health

The following sections list the essential aspects of health in the rough order they should be sought out, given the ability to do so. Some of these are relatively easy to obtain for a modest cost. Others may take more effort. The community described on this site should be able to provide most (if not all) of these as an integral part of its design on a day to day basis.

Pure Water

Pure water may have the greatest effect on achieving and maintaining health, for the least cost. In other words, it may have the highest benefit:cost ratio. If in doubt, start here. High quality, reverse osmosis water should be available in most communities. There is a variation in terms of quality. The upkeep of the premises providing the water should provide a clue as to the quality of the water. The difference can be tasted, as well as the effect that it has on clarity of mind and on one's energy levels.

Organic Food

The food we eat is what our body uses to sustain itself. It stands to reason, therefore, that the quality and balance of this food is what helps our body keep itself at an optimum level. The effort that is put into ensuring one eats well, should be amply repaid in the energy that one has to do one's daily tasks and the ability to respond to the variety of situations that are encountered every day.

Fresh Air

Plenty of time outdoors each day, engaged in vigorous activity, helps one to achieve and maintain a high state of health, as well as lend itself to improved creativity and the ability to solve complex problems. The cheapest form of excercise is walking. Invest in a good day pack, stock it with essential items (including water and a snack) and automatically one is freer to explore, try out new things and see new locations.

Sunlight

Being outdoors in the fresh air will naturally lead to being exposed to more of the daylight hours. The light levels outside are much higher than those inside. The combination of pure water, healthy food, fresh air, vigourous activity and sunlight leads to a positive frame of mind. In addition, being outdoors means that one is likely not exposed to the constant bombardment of information. Rather this time away from devices and computer screens means that one has time to process this information, rather than continually taking it in.

Wide Open Spaces

Being in wide open spaces also lends to a state of health and well being. This is in contrast to being surrounded by concrete, brick and mortar. Each substance gives off a particular energy. This energy is picked up by us and is reflected in how we feel. Being surrounded by nature also works the same way. We pick up the pace of the day and the season, not the latest scene flicking across our device.

Plenty of Excercise

When one gets plenty of excercise, our the muscles, tendons and bones in our body have a chance to be used. The stress and movement the excercise creates helps our body tissues increase their strength to handle the load. While our bodies can be excercised artifically indoors, the cumulative effect of outdoor excercise (even in inclement weather) can actually result in reduced cost and improved benefits.

Supplements

Supplements can help one achieve and maintain an optimal sense of health. The regimen that I have had personally work for me included: Vitamin C, Cal-Mag, high quality, mercury free fish oil (krill oil is a good choice), and a "greens" supplement.

Regular Schedule

A regular schedule (going to bed and getting up at the same time each day) is another low cost way to achieve and then maintain an optimal state of health. This may mean turning down shift work. Maintaining a regular daily rhythym allows the body to adjust and know when it needs to sleep and when it needs to get up for the day. Combining this with the above health regimens can lead to a cumulative effect which needs to be experienced to be understood.

Good Night's Sleep

A good night's sleep also means that one stop working on anything that causes stress or the brain overwork. Stopping highly technical work by 9 p.m. allows a full hour of slowing down before bedtime at 10:00 p.m. Going to bed at 10:00 p.m. means that there is a full 8 hours before 6:00 a.m. Allowing for a 6:00 a.m. rise time means that there is plenty of time to get ready for the day, before activity really picks up at 8:00 or 9:00 a.m.

Peaceful Atmosphere

A peaceful atmosphere complement's all of the above. That means one should try to live away from bus routes which start early in the morning or run late in the evening, especially if one starts and stops outside of one's window. It also means that one tries to live in a neighbourhood and around people that are quiet and respectful of the need for a quiet atmosphere. Finally, sounds of nature--the wind, waves or birds--can help to connect one to nature as part of one's background environment, rather than having to be sought out on special occasions.

Conclusion

The sum total of these aspects of health is what the community design described on this site can help one achieve. There is a cumulative effect, where the one complements the other. The net result of this effort should be improved creativity, enhanced resilience to stress, greater energy levels throughout the day and a more peaceful sleep at night. This should result in better relationships, better quality workmanship and a higher level of service.
